FHASS and CW&P are delighted to welcome Kate Cayley as our 2023-24 Writer-in-Residence. Kate comes to us with a truly impressive list of publications, awards, and accolades. She is the author of two short story collections, How You Were Born and Householders, two collections of poetry, When This World Comes to an End and Other Houses, the novel, The Hangman in the Mirror, as well as numerous plays performed both at home and abroad. She has won the Trillium Book Award, the Mitchell Prize for Poetry, and an O. Henry Short Story Prize, among many others. She was also a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction.

Kate has already been hard at work, engaging with our CW&P students. Her weekly blog about all-things-writing can be found right here in Alchemy. In it, she responds directly to questions students have anonymously submitted to a “suggestion box” in room B222. Kate also hosted the Ampersand Review Reading Series on Oct 12th, which featured readings and conversation with Stuart Ross and Bronwyn Fischer. She also moderated a brilliant panel for the &nd FestivalShort Stories are the Cutting Edge of Fiction — with Anuja Varghese, Kathy Friedman, and Daniel Scott Tysdal. Of course, on top of all this, Kate is still making herself available to meet Sheridan community members about their creative writing, so please pass the word on to your students, and reach out to her yourself if you have any projects you’d like to discuss.
