From the Interim Dean’s Desk: Welcome to Fall 2023!

Dear Colleagues,

Me with Heather Fawcett at Word on the Street

I’m continually amazed at the ways our faculty and staff distinguish themselves in their respective fields, and this semester has been no exception: in this issue you’ll hear about impressive professional recognition, thought leadership, creative and scholarly contributions from several of your colleagues. FHASS also continues to redefine applied research for the Humanities and Social Sciences within the Ontario College (and indeed, post-secondary) context. Read on to discover just a few examples of this landmark work, including the first ever &nd Festival of Creative Writing and Publishing, and funded projects like Portals to the Past, Stories of Home, and the Community Ideas Factory III: Life Skills Project. And remember: if you’d like to learn more about conducting applied research at Sheridan, consider applying to The Research Essentials Experience (TREE), offered by Generator.

As if that weren’t enough, the following pages include updates on the arrivals of our 2023-2024 Writer-in-Residence, Kate Cayley, and new full-time Professor of Diaspora and Migration Studies, Prof. Aisha Jamal, as well as some of the exciting curricular and co-curricular work underway across our programs and areas. You can also read here about our TESOL Plus program’s trip to Brazil and our new graduate certificate Program in Applied Creativity and Innovation (PACRE).

FHASS is truly an academic community sans pareille, worth celebrating now and throughout the year. Congratulations and enjoy!
