Professor Hee-Seung Kang Presents on TESOL and COIL
FHASS Professor Hee-Seung Kang (ESL & TESOL) presented her research in Innovations in Education Conference 2022 (McMaster University). The title of her presentation was “Reimagining ESL Teacher Education: Integrating Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) into TESOL Curriculum.”
Drawing on sociocultural perspectives to learning, she examined her experience of integrating COIL into the TESOL curriculum and explored its possibility in Canadian higher education. This study specifically reports and examines a collaborative teaching and learning experience of two higher education institutions: a college in Ontario and a university in Brazil. The findings suggest that integrating COIL component into curriculum allowed pre-service ESL teachers to foster intercultural communicative competence and critical awareness on language and culture.
