FHASS Welcomes Mary Huston!
I am Mary Huston, and I am the Embedded Student Advisor with FHASS working with the General Arts and Sciences (GASU) and Pre-Health Sciences students! I have been a part of the Sheridan community since I was a student (Social Service Worker, 2009) joining as a full-time employee in 2014. I spent 5 years working as an Employment Consultant helping students and the community find employment, before ultimately joining the Student Advisement team in 2019. I had a very non-traditional educational journey by which, I gained my BA with a major in Social Work (2021) and earned my Honours Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Waterloo in 2022. My MSW program is set to commence in Sept of 2026. Working with students to ensure academic success, clarify career goals and make sure they have an amazing experience in education is a true passion of mine. Faculty often refer students to me who may be academically at risk or otherwise need support in accessing services, advice, course planning and understanding policies. When I am not working, you can find me spending time with my twin 8-year-olds, enjoying the best each season has to offer including snowboarding and paddleboarding, or cooking some new (and ridiculously healthy) recipe. Most important lesson I learned in kindergarten: That I really did learn everything I needed to know: kindness, respect, and curiosity.
Most important lesson I’ve learned this year: There is hope in struggle and gratitude in strife.
Moment in my life I’d like to re-live: The moment when the only teacher who believed in me in high- school, came to the new student orientation at Sheridan College I was speaking at with his own daughter. The fact that he remembered me and expressed such pride – it was a top tier life moment.
My favourite word: Discombobulated
On my bucket list: Taking a solo trip
My favourite singer/musician and song: Currently I have been replaying the latest Yungblud’s album – specifically the track Zombie. As an artist he is genuine, his lyrics are raw, and he is very commanding in live performances.
