Emma Donoghue Visits Sheridan for Pride Reads!

Esteemed author Emma Donoghue visited Sheridan on February 27 for the third instalment of Sheridan’s Pride Reads event.

Pride Reads at Sheridan is a reading series created by Dr. Peter Grevstad from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHASS). This series features the voices and literary expression of sexually diverse Canadian writers who have published books with Queer themes, topics, and discourses. The intention is to bring Queer Presence to Sheridan College, and to the student and local communities. Previously, the series has featured Ruby Remendra Swanson and Brian Francis. Pride Reads features Canadian Literature, and engages both authors and the community in readings and discussions surrounding LGBTQ+ lived experiences in everyday life in Canada.

You can watch Dr. Grevstad’s conversation with Emma Donoghue below!

Author Introduction:

Born in Dublin, Ireland, in October 1969, Emma is the youngest of eight children of Frances and Denis Donoghue (the literary critic). She attended Catholic convent schools in Dublin, apart from one eye-opening year in New York at the age of ten. In 1990 Emma earned a first-class honours BA in English and French from University College Dublin (unfortunately, without learning to actually speak French). Emma then moved to England, and in 1997 received a PhD (on the concept of friendship between men and women in eighteenth-century English fiction) from the University of Cambridge. From the age of 23, Emma has earned her living as a writer, and has been lucky enough to never have an ‘honest job’ since she was sacked after a single summer month as a chambermaid. After years of commuting between England, Ireland, and Canada, in 1998 Emma settled in London, Ontario, and lives with Chris Roulston and their son Finn and daughter Una.
